Wonder Works, a children's museum in Oak Park, features 6,400 square feet of fun and exploration for kids up to age ten.
Permanent exhibits include:
The Great Outdoors, where sounds and lighting set the mood and a canopy creates a beautiful night sky. Tents are set up near a glowing "camp fire." Kids can climb a ladder into a tree house, and a nature trail allows kids to wander through the outdoors;
Build It, where children can work with blocks to construct houses, castles, or entire towns;
Lights, Camera, Action!, a performance area where kids can sing a song, entertain the audience, and record it for future viewing with an installed video recorder; and
Farm to Market, where kids can "shop" for fruits and vegetables, pick apples and corn, and milk a cow.
In North Avenue Art Works, children can paint, draw, sculpt and learn printmaking in a hands-on art studio. The museum plans to offer creative writing and book making, clay explorations, and even weaving.
Classes are offered seasonally for parents and little ones that encompass music, creative movement, and art. Check the website for a current schedule.
Birthday parties at Wonder Works include admission to the museum, plus exclusive use of the party room for one hour. Party packages start at $40 for members and $65 for non-members. Call well in advance for details and to make a reservation.
Family Membership is $75/year.
