about Yerba Buena Gardens:

In an area that was once barren of anything green this 8 1/2 acre combination arts and parks center has become one of the truly great places in town to take the kids. For starters, there's the restored 1906 vintage carousel rescued from Playland-at-the-Beach.

Right next door is a playground complete with tunnel slides and a spongy rubber floor that'll make your kids want to take flight, or at least feel like they can. Throughout the park is a lot of well-tended green space to skip through and a very tall fountain to run behind.

The Gardens also contains a bowling center, and a year-round NHL-sized ice skating rink. You might also want to visit the Zeum, a high-tech museum for older kids (ages 8-18) where kids can create animation and a multimedia video. The Yerba Buena Center for the Arts is the site of many dance, music, and theatrical performances.

Right next to the center is the Metreon, which contains an IMAX theater along with 15 regular movie screens, and several kid-centered exhibits worth visiting.

The Yerba Buena Gardens Festival presents over 100 free cultural events from May to October and the Children's Garden Series offers interactive performances specially designed for kids and families. Check the website for a complete listing.
