The posting above is not reflective of the Coppell YMCA at all. Almost every pool that has lifeguards and swim teachers employs high school kids, that is normal. And swimming is individual to each child, just like math some kids get it right away and some don't.

The Coppell Family YMCA is AWESOME. They run some of the best children's programs I have participated in and have something for everyone. I can't say enough about the afterschool staff and day camp staff, the Administration is so personable and we love it there.

I would not recommend the YMCA for kids to learn to swim under 6. My child has been swimming there for 4 months and has not progressed at all in the group swim classes.He is 4 yrs. old. They keep your kid in the same beginner class until they can swim 5-10 ft. by themselves. My child holds on to the teacher and she does not push him to try to do anything be himself. In explaining this to the teacher, the Y says they will never push a child to go underwater & they'll develop at their rate of speed. When the new month begins, kids that have never swam before enter the class and so he regresses down to their level. Class size can get up to 6 kids/class and my child didn't even fit on the step with the other kids, so sits behind everyone. Since the class is only 30 min., each child only gets 3-4 turns to do anything if your lucky. Waste of $$ unless you just want your child to float along in the water or you have a very outgoing/fearless child. Private lessons are $250/month vs. group classes at $70/month. Classes taught by high school kids.
