Qualified volunteer pilots share their love of aviation with young people by offering
free flights in their airplanes the third Saturday of each month - weather-permitting - at Airlake Airport in Lakeville, about 20 miles south of the Twin Cities.
The local chapter of the
national program provides basic lessons in
aerodynamics and safety as part of a pre-flight "ground school," and distributes books and posters to participants. Young Eagles also welcomes youth and scout groups, offering an exciting field trip opportunity.
The national program, launched in 1992, has served over
1.2 million young people. The Twin Cities chapter flies about 250 kids a year, and offers an annual scholarship to a young person demonstrating an interest in aviation.
Contact volunteer coordinators John Koser or Jeff Coffey for more information, or to reserve a slot for an upcoming flight day. Fearful kids are welcome to observe; they don't need to commit to fly to attend.
