Dialogues with Darwin


Dialogues with Darwin, an exhibition drawn from the American Philosophical Society'ss own Darwin collection - the largest outside of Cambridge, England - celebrates Darwin's 200th birthday and the sesquicentennial of the publication of his book On the Origin of Species. The collection includes original letters written by Darwin, manuscripts, rare first editions of his work (in many languages), and sumptuously illustrated books by other scientists.

The Independence Seaport Museum displays Skin & Bones: Tattoos in the Life of the American Sailor, a provocative exhibit that delves into the beliefs, mysteries, traditions, and power of the tattoo in American maritime culture. The collection features traditional and modern tattooing tools, flash (tattoo design samples) and other tattoo-related art, historic photographs and artifacts, a recreation of an old-time tattoo parlor, and a mini-documentary of the recorded personal stories of tattooed sailors.

Out on a Limb


The Morris Arboretum's Out on a Limb outdoor exhibit provides a bird's eye view of the forest from 50 feet above the ground. Visitors can stroll along the exhibit's 450-foot Canopy Walk, cross the Suspension Bridge to explore the Bird's Nest, scamper onto the rope netting of the Squirrel Scramble amidst two towering trees, or view the forest from the top of the Wissahickon Vista platform.

The Deep Sea Treasures exhibition dives into the world of ocean exploration. Hands-on displays illustrate marine science with beautiful graphics and introduce pioneers who journeyed into the deepest parts of the ocean. The technology used to explore the ocean depths is demonstrated with sonar, computers, and robotics. Visitors can discover which monster-like creatures from the deep produce light using bioluminescence, examine deep-sea technology, become underwater explorers in a diving bell, feel the chill of water from the ocean depths, and more.

American Girl Models Needed


The Hands-on House Children's Museum is looking for 50 girls to be volunteer models during four performances of its annual American Girl Fashion Show benefit in the ballroom at Legacy on 11/21-22. Each model must closely resemble one of the popular American Girl characters and wear a girls' size 10. Models are be required to attend evening rehearsals during the week of 11/16 and perform at two shows on the weekend of 11/21-11/22. Girls interested in serving as models should fill out a downloadable model interest form and mail it to the museum, or contact the museum by phone. Completed interest forms must be submitted along with a current photo by 8/15. Details are available online.
