Gold


A dazzling exhibition created by the American Museum of Natural History features 300 geological specimens and cultural objects that showcase gold in its most dramatic forms, from sunken treasure to hulking gold nuggets to ancient Aztec jewelry. Visitors can literally surround themselves with the shiny mineral - an entire 300-square-foot room in the gallery is covered floor-to-ceiling with just three ounces of 23-karat gold leaf.

This exhibit re-creates 1950s Alaska through photographs, memorabilia and everyday objects, accompanied by a narrative that explains how the post-World War II population explosion and resulting demands for amenities in the lower 48 triggered the Americanization of Alaska.

The museum offers hands-on, theme-related activities for kids through its Summer Activity Series. For an additional $5, children ages 10+ may be dropped off for a two hour maximum (parent picture ID is required at drop off and pick up). Space is limited; please call ahead to schedule. Children accompanied by an adult can just drop in.
