Animal Houses


Families can see, touch, and explore 11 human-scaled, whimsically-imaginative Animal Houses in Morton's wetland, woodland, and prairie ecosystems. The gigantic interactive homes, designed by professional artists, help kids experience life as an animal and understand why trees are important to the survival of animal habitats. The "Animal Tram," operating daily through August, takes visitors on a two-hour tour of the houses, stopping for 20 minutes each at the woodlands, wetlands, and prairie. Tickets are $9 for adults and $8 for children.

Created by the Children's Museum of Houston, Cyberchase: The Chase Is On is a one-of-a-kind, interactive exhibit based on the PBS Kids Go! math mystery cartoon, Cyberchase. The exhibit puts kids in the roles of the heroes, thwarting the TV show's villain, Hacker, by utilizing math and critical thinking skills. Harry Potter: The Exhibition


Muggles and wizards alike can enjoy an up-close and personal look at authentic artifacts displayed in elaborate settings inspired by locations from Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry - including the Gryffindor common room, Hagrid's hut, and the Great Hall. Visitors can also get their first glimpse at items from the next film, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, which is scheduled to open in theaters on July 17. Admission to the exhibit requires a timed-entry ticket. Purchase in advance, as the showings are quite likely to sell out quickly.

One World, One Sky: Big Bird's Adventure


Based on the popular children's television show, Sesame Street, One World, One Sky: Big Bird's Adventure features Big Bird, Elmo, and their friend from China, Hu Hu Zhu. The planetarium show - which makes its US debut at the Adler - was developed in conjunction with the Beijing Planetarium to foster cross-cultural appreciation and provide an age-appropriate introduction to astronomy for children.

Located in the Santa Fe building, where Daniel Burnham's city plan for Chicago was developed, the exhibition features images of Burnham, his family, and highlights of his career as an architect and city planner. Families can learn about Burnham's progression from failing college entrance exams to planning The World's Columbian Exposition of 1893 and creating the 1909 Plan of Chicago. And don't miss the Chicago Model City exhibit, which features a huge scale model of Chicago.

Picture Perfect: Art from Caldecott Award Books


An exhibition shines a spotlight on 17 books that have received a Caldecott Medal or Honor Award for illustration between 2006 and 2009. The featured artworks offer a world of different media for families to explore, including watercolor, oil, woodblock prints, scratchboard, collage, ink, and pencil drawings. Parents and children can compare the original art to the works on the printed page to see how color, size, and texture change when art is reproduced in a book. The exhibition is located in both the Family Room in the Ryan Education Center and Gallery 10, and picture books are available for families to read in each space. Featured artists include Brian Collier, Marla Frazee, Beth Krommes, David McLimans, Jon J. Muth, Kadir Nelson, Beckie Prange, Marjorie Priceman, Chris Raschka, Laura Vaccaro Seeger, Brian Selznick, Uri Shulevitz, Peter Sis, Melissa Sweet, David Wiesner, and Mo Willems.

Dinosaurs Alive!


Dinosaurs Alive!, located adjacent to Children's Zoo, gives kids a chance to get up close and personal with dinosaurs ranging from a 4-foot-tall "baby" to adult-size species. Life-size replicas include the Stegosaurus, three-horned Triceratops, flying Pteranodon, and the ever-popular meat-eating Tyrannosaurus rex. An interactive dig site, located on the zoo's East Mall, features two 4-foot by 8-foot raised shallow sandboxes, allowing junior paleontologists to unearth replica fossils of the Shunosaurus and Yangchuanosaurus dinosaurs.
