6th Annual World Folk Festival


More than 1,000 dancers, musicians, and artists of all ages and 22 countries animate the 6th Annual World Folk Festival, which includes performances and discussion panels in international dance, music, theater, cuisine, and crafts, plus Sunday's Parade of Nations. The Circus Circus Hotel hosts several events, too. A schedule of events is available online.

Planetarium: Pieces of Glass


Pieces of Glass traces the history of the telescope from Galileo's modifications to a child's spyglass and to the launch of NASA's Hubble Space Telescope and the future of astronomy. It explores the wonder and discovery made by astronomers through out the last 400 years. The program is followed by Stargazing, which allows the audience to hop through constellations, learn cool star names, groove to planetarium space music, and participate in a Q-&-A session with staff memebers.

Clark County Centennial 2009


Clark County marks its 100th birthday throughout 2009 with a year-long series of events, programs, publications, and the centerpiece exhibit Clark County 1909 to 2009: A Destination's Century, which explores the way in which the county has been not only a destination for gaming enterprises but also for ranchers, miners, entertainers, construction builders, and more. Many events are scheduled to take place at the Clark County Museum, but other locales take part in the festivities too. Check the website for the year's schedule.

Ferdinand the Bull


The Hudson Vagabond Puppets performs Ferdinand the Bull, the classic children's tale about a bull that would rather sniff flowers than fight in the bullring. The story is told as a narrated ballet with a larger-than-life bull, masked dancers, and specialized mechanical figures. After the program, students can take part in an on-stage demonstration of conflict resolution techniques without violence.

The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee


The Tony Award-winning musical tells a tale of six young people in the throes of puberty - overseen by grown-ups who barely managed to escape childhood themselves - who learn that winning isn't everything and that losing doesn't necessarily make you a loser. (Note that the show does have some risque material that is somewhat inappropriate for younger children, but we recommend it heartily for teens.)
