Galileo, the Medici and the Age of Astronomy explores the extraordinary effect that Galileo's work, as well as that of other luminaries during the age of the Medicis, had on science and on the world. The exhibition features more than 100 artifacts, including one of only two remaining telescopes owned and built by Galileo, instruments, paintings, prints, and manuscripts.

Party on the Parkway


An afternoon of food, music, and live entertainment takes places on the Ben Franklin Parkway before the annual concert with fireworks. This year's event features live Australian animals and edutainment, children's activities from the Please Touch Museum, a visit from the Philadelphia Zoo's Zoo on Wheels, a Go 4th and Learn pavilion, inflatables, face painting, sand art, a mobile children's theater, crafts, and more. The party, part of the city's 2009 Sunoco Welcome America! festivities, is underway at 20th Street and Benjamin Franklin Parkway.

Life, Liberty, and You Concert and Fireworks


The city's biggest concert event of the summer, offered as part of the 2009 Sunoco Welcome America! celebration, takes place at Eakins Oval, in front of the Philadelphia Museum of Art on the Ben Franklin Parkway. The show features live music by Sheryl Crow, Jeffrey Gaines, and The Roots, followed by a fantastic fireworks display set to patriotic music.

Amazing Machine!


Amazing Machine! features everyday machines displayed in "exploded" views. Their parts, separated and visible, allow a bird's eye view of the interior of such workhorses as the household vacuum cleaner, power drill, thermostat, and more. Guests are invited to experience the universal machine elements - gears, cams, pulleys, screws, springs, and other items - in a series of interactive stations. The exhibit also features multi-media commentary on machines and the relationships between man and machine portrayed in classic cinema such as Modern Times and Metropolis.

Butterflies!


Visitors can be surrounded by dozens of fluttering butterflies, originating from different countries, while strolling through a 1,200-square-foot, plant-filled setting that evokes a Costa Rican garden. Knowledgeable staff and interactive stations help explain the wonders of these delightful insects and their important connection to the natural world. The exhibit includes examples of the insects in different stages of development, including butterflies emerging from their chrysalises.

The Giant Heart


The Franklin Institute's giant walk-through heart is surrounded by a 5,000-square-foot exhibit area with numerous fun, interactive devices that kids can try. The exhibit also features a full-size re-creation of a surgical theater - complete with actual open-heart surgery being performed via video effects - and a display of some of the latest technologies used in human heart treatment. A musical cartoon about blood transport and giant crawl-through arteries are engaging for children.

Sports Challenge


With super-interactive devices and virtual reality experiences, The Sports Challenge has something for everyone. Balance on a surfboard that simulates the pitching of a wave, or hit the gas in a top fuel car to test your reaction time, or climb a rock wall and feel the force of friction. Kids can even compare their shoes to Shaquille O'Neal's size 22.

The 6,000 square-foot exhibition, located in the former Communications exhibit hall, features a two-story lighthouse, sailboat with billowing sail, walk-through cave, and enough water to keep any child occupied for hours! KidScience offers more than 20 interactive components, illustrating the scientific principles of sound, movement, geology, and reflection.
