Twilight Dance Series Opening Night


Playing for Change and Bushman open the summer concert season. Families can revel in sea breezes, gaze at the moonlight on the Pacific Ocean, and listen to the sounds of the annual Pier Twilight Dance Series. The summer kicks off with one great band after another. Kids can get their thrills on the Pacific Park rides before the entire family sets up a picnic on the pier, or down on the sand below, and starts to dance.

56th Presidential Inauguration


Master model designers at the park have created the historic scene of Barack Obama taking the Presidential oath of office on the steps of the capitol, along with his family, Joe Biden and his wife, and more than a thousand other mini-figures constructed from Lego bricks. Part of the fun is identifying the characters, which include familiar faces like Oprah, Aretha Franklin, and Senator Feinstein. The scene is on display in Miniland through Memorial Day weekend; note that the park is closed on Inauguration Day, Jan 20. Check the website for a complete event schedule.

Anime! High Art - Pop Culture


The Academy offers an exhibition in conjunction with the Goethe Institute, celebrating the art of Anime. The multi-media exhibition features nearly 400 cels, clips, and character models from popular series such as Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh, and Princess Mononoke. The exhibition is clearly divided by theme, with lots to interest kids and teens, but it should be noted that an adult-only area is included. The show is in the Grand Lobby Gallery and the Fourth Floor Gallery.
