Summer Sounds for Kids


The Los Angeles Philharmonic spend its summer at the Hollywood Bowl making classical music exciting for children programs of music and dance that change weekly, all geared especially for the younger set. Kids can either see a show at 10am and participate in arts and crafts at 11am, or see the show at 11:15am, doing arts and crafts before the performance at 10am. Advance registration is required; space is limited.

56th Presidential Inauguration


Master model designers at the park have created the historic scene of Barack Obama taking the Presidential oath of office on the steps of the capitol, along with his family, Joe Biden and his wife, and more than a thousand other mini-figures constructed from Lego bricks. Part of the fun is identifying the characters, which include familiar faces like Oprah, Aretha Franklin, and Senator Feinstein. The scene is on display in Miniland through Memorial Day weekend; note that the park is closed on Inauguration Day, Jan 20. Check the website for a complete event schedule.

Anime! High Art - Pop Culture


The Academy offers an exhibition in conjunction with the Goethe Institute, celebrating the art of Anime. The multi-media exhibition features nearly 400 cels, clips, and character models from popular series such as Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh, and Princess Mononoke. The exhibition is clearly divided by theme, with lots to interest kids and teens, but it should be noted that an adult-only area is included. The show is in the Grand Lobby Gallery and the Fourth Floor Gallery.

Festival of Arts and Pageant of the Masters


Since 1932 Laguna Beach has hosted an annual celebration of 140 of California's finest artists and their original works. The most famous event of the festival is the nightly Pageant of the Masters at 8:30pm, at which actors, designers, and a full orchestra recreate great works of art as "living pictures." The festival also includes children's activities, an exhibit of children's artwork, live entertainment, and art workshops daily. Note that August 29 is the festival gala, so normal programming is interrupted that day.
