Wild Music


Whales compose, bullfrogs chorus, songbirds greet the dawn, and people everywhere sing and dance. Wild Music explores evidence for the biological origins of music through interactive displays and exceptional sound experiences. Visitors can build soundscapes, play with vibrations and frequencies, and investigate unique sounds from birds, animals, and insects.

The updated Splash exhibit is a hands-on experience where visitors can build boats from a variety of items and then race the boats along a two-lane track, learn about the water cycle, and find out how water changes sound and affects how things look.

Swords of the Americas & Art of the Duel


George E. Weatherly's private collection of swords, sabers, and related artifacts from the United States, Canada and various South American countries, is on display, and visitors can also discover what separates a duel from regular fighting and ponder whether dueling was an effective process to address grievances or simply a socially-sanctioned form of murder.

Storybook character Madeline hosts an evening with zany games and plenty of photo ops for little ones (bring a camera). Kids can participate in pin the candle on the cake, take a whack at a birthday cake pinata, and play pass the present (the zoo's version of hot potato). An Evening of Wild Music


Families can make music with onion peels, corn stalks, and other things found in nature - or the dinner table! Environmental sound artist and composer Philip Blackburn introduces participants to his "talking plant," created by placing EEG brain wave sensors on a plant, and Louisville community artist Gregory Acker helps guests create "junkyard jingles" using tin cans, spoons, and other recycled scraps. Purchase tickets in advance.
