Frogs: A Chorus of Colors


Families can explore the evolution and biology of frogs, their importance to ecosystems, and the threats they face in the world's changing environments. More than 200 live frogs, from tiny dart poison frogs (some less than an inch long) to the enormous African bullfrog (as big as eight inches in diameter), are displayed in their recreated habitats, complete with rock ledges, live plants, and waterfalls. Approximately 25 species from countries such as Argentina, Bolivia, Borneo, Brazil, China, Colombia, Kenya, Myanmar, Nicaragua, Paraguay, Russia, Sumatra, Suriname, the United States, Uruguay, Venezuela, and Vietnam are represented. Interactive stations throughout the exhibition invite visitors to activate recorded frog calls, view videos of frogs in action, and test their knowledge about frogs. Tickets are required for timed entry, which is every hour on the half hour. We advise ordering in advance of visit.

Extreme Mammals


Extreme Mammals: The Biggest, Smallest, and Most Amazing Mammals of All Time explores the sometimes bizarre world of extinct and living mammals, and shines a spotlight on some of the spectacular fossils from the museum's collections in addition to showcasing animals with oversized claws, fangs, snouts, and horns. Highlights include the egg-laying platypus, the recently extinct Tasmanian wolf, fleshed-out models of spectacular extinct forms (don't miss Ambulocetus, a "walking whale"), and live sugar gliders (small marsupials that can glide over 150 feet). Media displays, animated computer interactives, hands-on activities, touchable fossils, casts, and taxidermied specimens round out the experience. Admission is by ticketed timed entry only. Tickets can be purchased in advance online or in person at the admissions desk.

City of Water Day Festival


Paddlers, sailors, mariners, and ferry-riders of all ages converge on Governors Island for the second annual day of fun, education and adventure in celebration of the waterfront. Participants can kayak and canoe (first come, first served), take boat tours (reservations required), and historic walks around the island, bird-watch, enjoy live music, learn about Native American customs along the Hudson River. Special kids' activities include a harbor critter touch tank, puppet shows, fishing, face painting, arts and crafts, a bounce house and slide, a raffle, and a Kids' Race sponsored by the New York Road Runners. Access to Governors Island is by ferry only. Ferries leave from the Battery Maritime Building, Slip 7.

Kids and their families can plant, tend, and harvest fruit, herbs, and vegetables all summer long in NYBG's Ruth Rea Howell Family Garden. Various display gardens educate visitors on the ingredients in their favorite meals, such as the the Pizza Garden, which features wheat, oregano, basil, tomatoes, and more, and The Breakfast Bowl, which displays edible plants that provide the ingredients in common cereal such as corn, barley, oats, rice, and wheat. Each month features a different theme. In July, kids can go on an herbal scavenger hunt to smell, taste, and touch some of the 40 herbs in the Garden's collection, make and sample a healthy herb snack, cool off with refreshing herbal iced tea, and pot up an herb to take home.
