The Life in Boxes: Comic Art & Artifacts, an exhibition drawn from a collection of over 20,000 comic books and 5,000 related books, reflects the history and development of the comic - strips, books, and graphic novels - and of animation that is often the cartoon come to life. Highlights of the exhibit include original artwork by influential comic strip artists including Frank King (Gasoline Alley), Milton Caniff (Terry and the Pirates), Watso (Hawkshaw the Detective), Stan Drake (The Heart of Juliet Jones), and Coulton Waugh (Dickie Dare). The collection is on display in the Kamin Gallery, located on the first floor of the Van Pelt-Dietrich Library. A valid photo ID is required to enter the library building; weekend visitors must register in advance by phone or via email.

Everyday Rhythms


Everyday Rhythms showcases the unique ways in which people have used musical sounds express themselves throughout history. The exhibit features a variety of musical instruments, but focuses primarily on drums, banjos, bells, and zithers (Pennsylvania German stringed instruments in which the strings are stretched along the length of the soundbox). Visitors can experiment with hands-on reproductions of instruments similar to the ones on view and to create their own sounds and music. Younger guests can enjoy books and games related to the exhibit's theme.

Masterpieces in Miniature


Small-scale versions of masterpieces by well-known artists have been created by miniaturists from the region for the museum's third annual miniatures exhibition. Eight of the nine vignettes serve as showcases for the miniature artists' interpretations of original, full-scale works, using a scale where one inch equals one foot. The ninth miniature takes its inspiration from the book Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden.

Hadrosaurus foulkii


At the time of its scientific description in 1858, Hadrosaurus foulkii, found in Haddonfield, NJ was the most complete dinosaur skeleton ever unearthed. When it was placed on exhibit at The Academy of Natural Sciences in 1868, it was the first mounted dinosaur skeleton displayed anywhere in the world. To mark the 150th anniversary of its scientific description, the museum remounts a cast of the 25-foot-long plant-eater as the centerpiece of an exhibit called Hadrosaurus foulkii: The Dinosaur that Changed the World. This exhibition is the first time the full skeleton cast has been displayed in Philadelphia since the 1930s.

Black History Month Field Trip


The Constitutional Walking Tour of Philadelphia and the African-American Museum in Philadelphia (AAMP) offer a combination field trip experience for school groups to celebrate Black History Month. A 75-minute walking tour through America's birthplace features 15 historic sites and attractions, including the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, Declaration House, the President's house site, Mother Bethel African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church, and Washington (Congo) Square. At AAMP, students can learn about the African-American perspective on the Vietnam War in the Soul Soldiers: African-Americans and the Vietnam Era exhibit, and participate in multi-disciplinary educational programs that explore African forms of cultural expression and their links to African-Americans within the region and throughout the African Diaspora. Tours of at least 25 people depart and conclude at the Independence Visitor Center (Sixth and Market Streets); one free adult chaperone is admitted per 10 children. Advance registration is required.

A Longwood Gardens Christmas


Thousands of poinsettias accented with amaryllis, begonias, tulips, and many other flowers flourish inside the heated conservatory, and Longwood's signature 20-foot Christmas tree features a multitude of elegant red and ivory ornaments and shimmering white lights. Outdoors, 420,000 decorative lights illuminate the trees at night, and (weather permitting) colorful, open-air fountain displays are set to music.
