Outdoor Exploratorium


The Exploratorium takes to the great outdoors, with an interactive exhibit at Fort Mason. Kids can find out how to use the Golden Gate Bridge as a thermometer and how flags flying at different heights along the skyline can double as a wind observatory. Visitors can find the Outdoor Exploratorium at Fort Mason between San Francisco's Aquatic Park and the Marina District. Maps are available at the Fort Mason Office in Building A.

Looking In: Robert Frank's "The Americans" includes all 83 images from The Americans in their original sequence, as well as a film Frank made in 2008 solely for the exhibition. Goldsworthy Spire

John Baldessari: A Print Retrospective from the Collections of Jordan D. King Tut


More than 3,000 years after King Tut's reign, and 30 years after the original exhibition opened in San Francisco, the de Young presents Tutankhamun and the Golden Age of the Pharaohs, an exhibition showcasing 130 outstanding works from the tomb of Tutankhamun, as well as those of his royal predecessors, his family, and court officials. Admission to Tutankhamun requires a timed-entry ticket, which specifies a 30-minute window for entering the exhibition. Once visitors have entered the exhibition, they may take as long as they'd like to view the exhibition, within normal exhibition hours. Select the date and time carefully, as no refunds or exchanges are made. Tickets cannot be reserved less than 24 hours in advance. Tickets are available through Ticketmaster or at the de Young or Legion of Honor beginning June 27. Check the website for more details.

African Hall


Kids can take a virtual safari through Africa by exploring the dioramas of African Hall, filled with lions, cheetahs, zebras, and antelope, which share the hall with a lowland gorilla, tortoises, lizards, and fish. Always a favorite, African penguins dip and dive in a 25,000-gallon tank at the end of the hall. (Penguin feedings take place daily at 10:30am and 3:30pm.)

Visitors are invited to step inside a living rainforest, complete with croaking frogs and chirping birds. The exhibit features one of Borneo?s bat caves, chameleons from Madagascar, lines of industrious leaf cutter ants, and tropical butterflies. Kids love the glass elevator that drops into the Amazonian flooded forest ? the land of anacondas, piranhas, and electric eels. An acrylic tunnel allows visitors to walk beneath the Amazonian river fish that swim overhead.

The Living Roof


One of the most unique exhibits at the California Academy of Sciences is its "living roof," a 2.5-acre expanse of native California plants. Part of the museum's green building strategy, the roof provides insulation; prevents storm water runoff; reduces the urban heat island effect; and creates new habitat for native birds, butterflies, and other beneficial insects. The seven hills of the living roof echo the hilly topography of San Francisco.

What does it take to live underwater? Visitors can find out in this innovative exhibit that includes more than 100 aquarium tanks filled with fish, reptiles, amphibians, insects, and other invertebrates. Mystery Trail Challenge


Families can solve a mystery at Crissy Field. Participants meet at the Warming Hut information kiosk, near the fishing pier and Golden Gate Bridge at the western end of Crissy Field. There they can pick up a booklet that describes the mission and directs them to the Mystery Trail where there are clues hidden along a one-mile stretch of the park. A special prize awaits successful hunters who find all nine items. Children must be accompanied by adults.
