See the nation's original records in their full-scale glory, including the 13-foot scroll of the Articles of Confederation (never before displayed unrolled), a 13-by-13-foot map of the Gettysburg Battlefield, a gigantic footprint of a dinosaur, the size 22 sneakers of basketball legend Shaquille O'Neal, and the first printing of the Declaration of Independence, produced on the night of July 4-5, 1776.

Tramping and Trailing with the Girl Scouts


The exhibition features a collection of Girl Scout uniforms from the 1910s, 1930s, and 1960s; Brownie objects from as early as 1937; and a display of cookie fundraising materials, including a vintage tin, box, and sales poster. Extensive camping and hiking exhibits are highlighted by a tent and official Girl Scout gear including a canteen, collapsible cup, pocket knife, compass flashlight, and even a "sit-upon," the small padded mat Scouts made themselves. Exploration of Alexandria's Girl Scout history, drawn from records, photos and oral history, reaches back to the 1930s when the first troop was formed at the St. Agnes School, followed a few years later by one for African American girls through Hopkins House.

Designing the Lincoln Memorial


The exhibit showcases the six-foot-high plaster working model of the celebrated seated Lincoln statue by American sculptor Daniel Chester French, the wood model of the Lincoln Memorial that renowned American architect Henry Bacon used to bolster his entry in the design competition for the memorial, life-size photo banners of the final Lincoln sculpture, and a watercolor of the East Elevation of the Lincoln Memorial by Jules Guerin.

Terra Cotta Warriors


Nearly 2,000 years ago, thousands of life-size clay figures were buried in massive underground pits to accompany China's first emperor, Qin Shihuangdi, into the afterlife. Their discovery outside the city of Xi'an in 1974 is one of the greatest archaeological finds of the 20th century. The exhibition Terra Cotta Warriors: Guardians of China's First Emperor features treasures from the tomb complex including 15 life-size figures, weapons, armor, coins, and more. Entry to the exhibit requires the purchase of tickets, sold by date and 30-minute time blocks. The Price of Freedom: Americans at War


The exhibition surveys the history of the US military from the Colonial era to the present and exploring ways that wars have been defining episodes in American History. Using more than 800 original artifacts, graphic images, and interactive stations the exhibition tells stories of how Americans have fought to establish the nation's independence, determine its borders, shape its values of freedom and opportunity, and define its leading role in world affairs. Among the objects included in the exhibition are one of the few Revolutionary War uniforms in existence; George Washington's sword and scabbard; a restored Huey Helicopter, an icon of the Vietnam War; and the uniform worn by Colin Powell during Operation Desert Storm.

Partners in Evolution: Butterflies + Plants


The permanent, 4,000-square-foot exhibition includes a 1,200-square-foot Butterfly Pavilion which features live tropical and temperate butterflies (up to 400 at a time) and plants from around the world. Volunteer interpreters and printed guides help visitors identify the butterflies and understand their behaviors. The connected exhibit explores how butterflies and plants have co-evolved or influenced each others' evolution over millions of years. The Pavilion is ticketed and requires a small fee; the exhibit is free.
