As you might guess from the name, this bright, airy salon features a cool beach theme that's a breath of fresh sea air along this gray stretch of Phinney Avenue. Walls are painted lime sherbet green, kites hang from the ceiling, and beach-themed decorating surprises abound.

Smaller kids can sit on what has to be the coolest kiddie salon seats in the city, including a dolphin, a sea turtle, and a whale. A regular barber's chair is also available for bigger kids who've passed the stage of needing an entertaining place to sit.

Shining Star Childcare provides a family childcare environment in a private home with large a fenced yard, offering a preschool curriculum and a kindergarten readiness program. Classes in infant and toddler basic American Sign Language are also available. Children learn cognitive, communication, social, and math skills through activities that also foster emotional growth, including music and arts and crafts. Meals are provided.

Programs are full-time or a full-time slot can be shared with a friend. The instructor is CDA-certified, and all staff are parents or grandparents, certified in first aid, CPR, and have passed background checks.

Flynn's is a licensed, in-home daycare and preschool that offers a USDA food program, monthly newsletters, weekly themes, circle time, show and tell, field trips, summer activities, a large outdoor play area, and before- and after school childcare. Full- and part-time programs are available.
