The Family Room is an indoor play area for children - and adults! For the kids there is a climbing structure, a variety of toys, art supplies, and children's books. Regularly scheduled activities (included in admission fee) include craft, music, and story times, and classes are also offered (for an additional fee) in language, music, crafts, and more. For the adults, there are magazines, a lending library (read a book while you are at the space or take it home to read and bring back when you are done), and a space that you don't have to clean up at the end of the day.

The area used for classes is also available to rent for birthday parties, meetings, baptisms, baby showers - you name the occasion. Call for pricing.

The Curiosity Zone is a hands-on science center for kids ages two through 11. Classes and summer camps build on kids' natural curiosity, using familiar, fun, hands-on activities to inspire them to think creatively about the world around them. Most classes take place in a kid-sized lab - full of fun, inspiring things, but nothing dangerous.

Parents and siblings can easily pass class time in the parent's lounge, offering chairs, newspapers, and magazines, and the Secret Science Agents' Clubhouse, a connected play area featuring beanbag chairs, books, and self-directed science activities.

Birthday parties can be held in the party room, and include demonstrations and hands-on activities - kids even make their own drinks, invitations, balloons, and more.

CREATE Arts Center is a non-profit organization offering arts classes, camps, parties, and special events for the general population, as well as art therapy and other art related activities for special needs clients.

CREATE's varied arts programs include such classes as Potluck Art, Cartooning, Drawing and Painting, Stone Carving, Teen Art Club, Bead & Jewelry Making, Stichery & Hand Sewing, and Pottery.

During school vacations CREATE offers spring, summer, and winter arts camps. Children participate in art, music, theater, and recreational activities, lead by professional artists/teachers who are experts in their field. Classes include such activities as clay, drawing, painting, stone carving, mask making, paper mache, sculpture, music, drama, book making, textiles, collage, and more.

Art therapy resources include arts classes for families with autistic children, after school arts programs for children at risk; and art therapy for patients in psychiatric and other facilities.

Designed and facilitated by a registered art therapist, the Art in Hand program provides a developmentally appropriate approach to creativity and the arts for young children; classes are unique in that they are designed especially, and exclusively, for toddlers and preschoolers. The Art in Hand program is based on an understanding of the social, emotional, cognitive, motor, and sensory needs of young children, and the program is designed to support growth across these areas. The goal is not so much to create great artists, but through providing great art experiences, to help little ones develop into great people who can think creatively and navigate confidently through many areas of their lives.

Each session incorporates an interactive story time intended to enhance children's early love of reading and emerging language skills, while inspiring young imaginations for the art-making that follows. Age-appropriate art materials and sensory experiences are introduced to stimulate children's natural desire to create and express themselves. Budding artists have opportunities to experiment with a wide range of quality art media designed specifically for use by young children (non-toxic and washable). All classes require parent participation, so parents get to experience first-hand the joy of creating with their children and gain confidence and inspiration for trying new ideas at home.

In addition to being an all-purpose place for charitable donations, the American Red Cross of the National Capital Area helps people in our community prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies that may be local, state-level, national, or international in nature. In locations around the DC metro area, the Red Cross offers courses in disaster preparedness - for people and their pets, first aid, CPR, lifeguard training, and more.

Jelleff Boys & Girls Club provides a safe and fun place for kids to spend time after school. The Jelleff Club is a full-service, year-round Club offering a variety of programs in sports, education, recreation, and the arts, housed in a facility that includes a gym, game room, Teen Center, computer lab, outdoor pool, and field. It offers an after school tutoring program, special activites such as yoga, art, hip hop, and hand drumming, as well as Youth leadership groups.

Summer Day Camp includes daily swimming lessons, sports, arts and crafts, field trips, computer time, games, special events, library time, a summer reading program, and games room activities. Before Care and After Care are also available.

The DCJCC, as it's better known, offers a plethora of family activities. Family swim and gym times, playgroups, and special holiday activities make this a great place to be and belong.

Programs for children include infant and toddler classes, chess club, private swimming lessons, soccer, basketball, gymnastics, birthday parties, and after-school care.

The Preschool, for children ages two to five, is open year-round from 7:30am-6pm. The school begins accepting applications one year in advance of the desired start date.

The Parenting Center offers networking opportunities, resources and programming for pregnant couples and for babies, toddlers, young children, and their parents.

Summer camp programs are available for children in grades Pre-K through 12.

The Town Hall Education Arts & Recreation Campus - THEARC - is a $27 million, 110,000 square foot, state-of-the art campus located in southeast DC. Nine cultural and social service agencies are based at THEARC - including Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Washington, Children's National Medical Center, The Corcoran Gallery of Art, Covenant House Washington, the Levine School of Music, Parklands Community Center, The Washington Ballet, Trinity University, and Washington Middle School for Girls - all of which share the goal of helping children and families reach their full potential.

In addition to the nine partner agencies based here, THEARC also features a 365-seat theater - the only theater east of the Anacostia River - where children can expand their horizons through drama, music, and dance, and the Washington, DC community can come together for events, performances, and town hall meetings.

Little Sprouts Playtime Center is an indoor playground that offers a variety of classes (and camps) in addition to open play time. Classes include music and movement, arts and crafts, cooking, and playdough fun. Parents can drop the kids off for Mom's Morning Out or Parent's Night Out. There is also an Enchanted Princess Tea Room, where little princesses can go wild with dress up, tea time, stories, crafts, and more.

Birthday parties, with a choice of themes, can be held in the playroom, and include open play time, pizza, drinks, and more. The winner of our 2008 Parents' Picks quest to find the Best Artsy Class for Little Kids in DC, Baby Ballerina is a dance studio for children ages one- through six-years old. At this school for little princesses, children enter a magical world designed to encourage their creativity, rhythm, and confidence. The studio offers ballet, tumbling, tap, and jazz instruction filled with fairies and fairytales to infuse the love of dance in every child involved regardless of their age.

To showcase student's accomplishments and foster self-esteem, recitals are held throughout the year - including Baby Nutcracker at Christmas. There is a Summer Princess Camp Program for ages two to six with dance, crafts, and performance at the end of the week. Several special Princess-themed birthday party packages are also available.

Available at the center and throughout the DC Metro area in rec centers and schools, Funfit Tots classes (for kids six months through five years) combine creative movement and active play with music, stories, and a variety of play equipment, giving children and parents a complete heart-healthy, fun, physical workout together. In addition to the original Funfit classes, the Fitness Center offers classes in yoga, ballet, art, music and motion, sports and games, kung fu, adult Tai Chi, special needs, and "The Circuit," a complete strength and cardio workout for children ages five through 13. Active Spring & Summer camps are available half-day for three- to six-year-olds as well as a cheerleading full-day camp for four- to eight-year-olds.

Open Gym, for infants through age 13, is held a couple of days a week, where children can bounce in the moonbounce; work out in the Circuit; read some books; play with puzzles, cars, and blocks; ride the kiddie-coaster; be creative in the art room; and more. Frying Pan Farm Park preserves a piece of Fairfax County's rural heritage with a working demonstration farm. The park's Kidwell Farm recreates the era of 1920 to 1950, when family dairy farms blanketed the landscape. Frying Pan also offers classes for scouts, a preschool program, regular equestrian events, and summer camps.

Seasonal wagon rides last for 20-minutes, winding through the woods and fields of Frying Pan Farm Park, and are complete with a lesson about the plants and animals living at the park.

There is also a 25-yard by 25-meter swimming pool, for those who actually want to swim.

There is a state-of-the-art fitness center, two multipurpose rooms, and a party room. The multi-purpose rooms hold classes in fitness and recreation such as dance, arts and crafts, sports, martial arts, drama, and photography. It is the first private play studio in Northern Virginia featuring custom designed, soft-sculptured, foam play elements. Each class is run by skilled and energetic teachers, who lead children through activities designed to strengthen their cognitive, motor, and social skills. Among other things, children sing, dance, play musical instruments, navigate obstacle courses, and play interactive games.

There is a sibling area for older children not taking classes and a coffee bar for parents and caregivers. Open play is offered during the week, and birthday parties can be held at the studio on the weekends.
