Callanwolde, a magnificent Gothic-Tudor style home, sits on 12 lovely acres in the Druid Hills neighborhood. The grounds, which consist of sculptured lawns, formal gardens, nature trails and a rock garden, have been partially restored by the DeKalb County Federation of Garden Clubs, and are maintained by DeKalb County.

The Center often hosts family-friendly events; see our calendar for listings. Callanwolde also offers a wide variety of arts education classes for children and adults each quarter. Classes typically meet for 10 weeks or less, and registration begins approximately two weeks prior to the start of classes.

Summer art camps are offered for children of all ages - from newborn to 16 years - in weeklong sessions. Sessions include visual arts and pottery, drama, storytelling, and Kindermusik. Call for current prices and schedules.

The Center for Puppetry Arts is the largest organization in the United States dedicated to the art form of puppetry and the winner of our 2008 Parents' Picks quest to find the best Indoor Party/Playspace for Big Kids in the Atlanta area. The three-story Center includes a 350-seat Mainstage Theater, 170-seat Downstairs Theater, Atrium, the Power of Wonder Museum, and Museum Special Exhibits.

The permanent exhibits are worth in a trip to the Center themselves, and we find that children of all ages find something to intrigue them. Check out our review for highlights.

The Center's Family Series presents original adaptions of classical stories and new works in a wide range of puppetry styles. Create-a-Puppet workshops provide a unique souvenir of the experience, and are included in the ticket price.

The mission of the Chastain Arts Center, one of Atlanta's oldest community arts centers, is to provide a nurturing place where artists of all ages and skill levels are encouraged to create, learn, and enjoy. Classes and workshops are offered in a variety of fine arts and crafts. Exhibits in the adjacent gallery and throughout the Center showcase both the work of outside artists and artwork created by instructors and students.

Art a la Carte Summer Camp starts in the beginning of June and runs through the beginning of August; registration begins in April. Campers are Tater Tots (ages two to three, with an adult), Small Fries (ages four to five, potty trained), and Spuds (ages six to 12). The Children's Center for Creative Learning features Abrakadoodle, a nationally known art education program for children ages 20 months through 12 years, The Music Class, for children birth-5 yrs., and The Spanish Academy, an immersion program for preschoolers in the Spanish Language.

Christian Youth Theater (CYT) is an after school theater arts training program for students ages 4-18. Drama, voice, dance, and a broad spectrum of specialty theatrical classes are available. Auditions for CYT's performances are held each season, and three productions are done per year.

Since it's founding in 1981, in San Diego, CYT has grown to be the largest Youth Theater in the nation. There are 17 branches across the country providing training to approximately 10,000 students every year.

Instructors are professionals, qualified in teaching and/or performing. CYT is not affiliated with a church body, and people of all faiths are welcome.

The Cultural Arts Council (CAC) offers cultural services, presentations, and programming in Douglas County. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the two-story Greek Revival home was built by a US Senator in 1901, and its "rescue" by the Arts Council instigated the development of the historic district in Douglasville.

Dunwoody Baptist is a house of worship that hosts the Dunwoody School for the Arts, as well as a variety of special camps and children's programs that are open to non-members, and very popular. Themes include sports, princess, music, and drama.

A subsidized performing arts school that offers performing arts instruction at affordable prices. Instruction is offered in piano, guitar, strings, brass, woodwinds, dance, and drama. Scholarships are available.

Hancock Fabrics sells fabric and home sewing and decorating accessories, knitting and quilting supplies, sewing machines, scrapbooking materials, and craft projects. Stores offer sewing classes and camps especially for teens.

Henley's Haven is dedicated to raising awareness of art by teaching 3d animation and art, and open up doors to children's worlds by providing children with their own personalized 3D animation featuring themselves.

The High Museum of Art, founded in 1905 as the Atlanta Art Association, serves as Atlanta's leading art museum. Its permanent collection is noted for significant holdings of 19th and 20th century American art, a critically acclaimed collection of decorative arts, and a burgeoning collection of American folk art.

The Greene Family Learning Gallery is designed for children ages five to 10, and offers plenty of hands-on experiences for enhancing and enriching the museum visit. Some children never want to visit the rest of the buildings - this is their idea of a museum!
On Saturdays and Sundays, family tours leave from the learning gallery at 2pm.

Five hands-on activity areas are inspired by elements of the Museum's collection and include a plexi-glass easel drawing area and a sculpture section.

There's plenty to enhance children's sleep and play spaces, including a line of Disney decor items, paint that turns walls into chalkboards, whimsical wallpaper and window coverings, closet organizers, storage bins, rugs and lamps, and even some child safety items. Its seasonal garden centers sell seeds, plants, tools, and outdoor furniture, including kid-sized chairs and tables.

With all the construction materials, chemicals, and small parts stacked high in the aisles or in open bins, unsupervised children are in real danger here, so parents should stay on alert. (And while those large shopping carts and rolling pallets just beg to be ridden, it's a no-no.)

Home Depot stores offer free Kid Workshops the first Saturday of each month from 9am-11am. Children ages four to 12 and their accompanying parent or adult learn about tool safety while building birdhouses, fire trucks, mail organizers, and other items from pre-fab kits. Each child also receives a kid-sized Home Depot orange apron and project pin. To sign up for a Kid Workshop, stop by the store and put your kid's name on the list - space is limited, so it's best to sign up early. How-to clinics are offered for Mom and Dad, too.

Home to the Children's Art Museum, Hudgens also offers great art classes for both adults and children.

Art exhibitions are presented throughout the year in the Mary S. Kistner Atrium, Robert D. Fowler Gallery, the Education Gallery, and the Al Weeks Sculpture Garden. The permanent collection holds works by acclaimed artists such as Joan Miro, Pablo Picasso, Roy Lichtenstein, Wassily Kandinsky and Robert Rauschenberg.

State-of-the-art facilities include a children's pottery studio with slab roller, extruder, and wheels for children, and two children's art rooms, which are used for classes in two-dimensional media such as drawing and painting.
