The Alliance Francaise de Denver enhances a young child's natural ability to learn language by providing a structured routine in classes that is both dynamic and interactive. Young kids enjoy learning French through games, songs, storytelling, sensory experiences, and various other activities. Parents are welcome to attend with their child. Instructors are native French speakers.

Baby Power/Forever Kids provides progressive and developmentally appropriate, gymnastic and musical, parent/child play, and enrichment programs. Classes are also offered in Spanish, Baby Power Signing, art, science, drama, and cooking, as well as summer camps. Most classes require advance registration, although open gym is offered several times a week.

Birthday party packages are available and can be customized based on length of time, number of guests, services, etc. You can even add a craft or other activity.

Dawn Keller, a certified Baby Signs consultant, teaches workshops to parents, grandparents, and caregivers of children ages six months to three years.

The Meadows Branch Library, is located behind Safeway in the "Meadows on the Parkway" shopping center at Baseline and Foothills Parkway. It follows the concept of a "bookstore", to blend in with the shopping center atmosphere. The interior features a large children's area with a "Play House Wall" and unusual seating designed to accommodate children and their parents for reading and story hour.

There are nine computers throughout the library for patron use. Seven of these have access to the internet, catalog, and several data bases. One of the internet computers is in large print. An additional computer is dedicated for catalog use only. The ninth computer, located in the children's area, is dedicated for children's use with many fun and interesting children's programs with a parent's manual available.

The CU Wizards Program provides an informal, entertaining, and interactive introduction to chemistry, physics, biology, and astronomy. Concepts are aimed at students in the fifth to ninth grades, but all ages are welcome to come learn, have fun, and experience science hands-on. Shows are held at 9:30am on the CU Boulder campus, one Saturday each month from September through June and last approximately one hour.

FasTracKids is an academic enrichment center designed to develop children's critical thinking, leadership, and communication skills. State-of-the-art technology is employed to deliver curriculum, and activities include hands-on exercises, role-playing, and videotaped speaking exercises in various subjects.

Beautiful murals cover the walls in this gym just for young children so they can roll, crawl, climb and create with the safe equipment and friendly staff. Movement classes are for infants, toddlers, and walkers. Craft classes and music classes are designed for kids aged two to six. It's a great place for birthday parties, and the family nights are fun for the whole family.

Lookout Mountain Nature Center and Preserve is a 110-acre park that was originally the summer home of Charles Boettcher, a prominent Denver entrepreneur. Donated by his granddaughter in 1968, it offers interactive exhibits, trails, and various activities designed to help you learn about your favorite aspect of Mother Nature.

While visiting you can look for that elusive Abert squirrel on 1.5 miles of gently rolling trails, enjoy a picnic lunch under the towering Ponderosa pines, and enjoy scenic views of Pike's Peak and lots more. You'll also find trail links to Buffalo Bill's Museum and Grave, Beaver Brook Trail, and Apex and Windy Saddle Parks.

The Morrison Nature Center at Star K Ranch is composed of 200 acres and is part of the Sand Creek Regional Greenway, a 14-mile long trail system connecting the cities of Aurora, Denver, and Commerce City. The nature center renovation project was completed in October 2003 and is built from the old homestead of the Stark family. Star K Ranch encompasses a variety of habitats including short-grass prairie, wetlands, ponds, Sand Creek, and riparian areas, making it a wonderful area for exploration.

The PCC offers fun and interactive programs for all ages and ability levels, designed to help you discover the wonders of the prairie. Experience the more-remote 5,700-acre West Bijou site of the PCC. On a limited basis, in the company of a naturalist, visitors can enjoy the feeling of unbroken, wide-open prairie with wildlife, botanical, archaeological, and paleontological treasures. While furture plans are to develop facilities and amenities to share the extraordinary beauty of West Bijou, this site currently has no public facilities. Visits and programs at West Bijou are by reservation only, and always in the company of a PCC staff person.

For all programs we suggest that you dress for outdoors, including warm layers and sturdy shoes or boots. Insect repellant and sun protection are desirable in summer months.

Recipe for turning a lemon into lemonade: Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge. Located just eight miles northeast of downtown Denver, the refuge is the largest contiguous open space in the Denver metropolitan area and will soon be one of the largest urban national wildlife refuges in the United States. Where once chemical weapons were produced and soil extremely contaminated now is an amazing collection of deer, prairie dogs, coyotes, bald eagles, and many species of hawks, owls, and other birds that thrived in the abandoned fields, grasslands, and wood lots that had been protected from forty years of urban sprawl and development.

Since 1992, the US Fish and Wildlife Service has managed the site monitoring wildlife health, restoring native prairie habitats, and providing opportunities for wildlife-dependent recreation. The refuge now offers extensive programming for all ages and is one of the best kept secrets in the Denver metro area.

Located southwest of Denver, Roxborough State Park is known for its spectacular sightseeing, tranquil surroundings, trails, and Visitor Center. The park offers hiking, cross-country skiing, and educational programs on Colorado history, geology, and wildlife viewing. Roxborough is a day-use park only. Pets are not allowed.

The Signing Smart program works with hearing babies, toddlers, and their parents, teaching when and how to sign most effectively with pre-verbal children. Classes are taught at various locations.
