The AAF Rose Bowl Aquatics Center, a leading swimming and diving facility located in Pasadena's Brookside Park at the Rose Bowl, offers year round programming for families, from babies to seniors, regardless of ability to pay. The facility provides an ideal setting for aquatic fitness, housing two 50-meter pools, a 40,000 gallon warm water pool for teaching and physical therapy, and a fitness center for weight resistance and cardio training.

Programs include group and private swim and diving lessons, water polo, various teams, and the Anderson Adventure Camp H2O summer program.

Armory Center for the Arts is a 20,000 square-foot space conceived to give the community opportunities to appreciate and create contemporary art. The Armory started as the education department of the Pasadena Art Museum, then moved into the National Guard Armory building in Old Pasadena.

It now presents exhibitions and performances of contemporary art, and provides a place for artists and educators to meet, learn, and refresh their skills.

Classes are available for children of all ages, and encourage students to appreciate and understand contemporary art while they are creating it.

Memberships are $100/family, and include invitations to exhibit openings, discounts on exhibit catalogues, and the opportunity to register early and get discounts for the art classes.

Art of Music Studio is a private music studio led by award-winning pianist, composer, and musicologist Dr. Sanya Henderson. The studio offers private lessons for piano, guitar, voice, and flute for all ages and levels. Group classes for children up to age six include Kindermusik and group keyboard, and a music enrichment program is available for preschools.

The first lesson is free. Group classes for children are organized in eight or sixteen-week sessions, while private lessons are offered on a monthly basis.

Kindermusik summer camps are offered in five-week sessions from May to September, featuring 45-minute classes of music, instruments, storytelling, and other activities for children up to age five. The camps are held at locations in Montrose and Eagle Rock and cost $100 to $115 per session.

Classes at Art-Works are designed to give students the opportunity to explore in depth the rich experience of painting, drawing, and mixed media. Continuous classes are weekly and students may enroll at any time, space permitting.

Youth classes, for children ages four to 17, are designed to offer a safe, fun, and encouraging environment for children & teens to discover their own creative vision and explore self-expression and communication through the visual arts. Students use traditional and non-traditional techniques and materials to learn the language of art. Painting, drawing, and mixed media techniques are used to explore line, shape, color, and texture, and to examine familiar objects and places in the world (still life, animals, people, the environment, etc?), as well as more abstract concepts of mood and emotion.

Classes offered are painting/drawing & mixed media; Mommy & me; and Illustration. Classes are held after-school Tuesday-Friday and on weekends. Tuition is based on a four-week period (four classes) and is adjusted during months with holidays or a varying number of weeks.

Four-day art camps for children ages six to 13 are held during summer, winter, and spring breaks. Camps are held Tuesday-Friday from 9am-1pm. Each week offers different projects, so children can sign up for one or more sessions. Refreshments and a snack are provided; children should bring a lunch. Cost is $320 per week.

Babes in Backpacks offers a full range of outdoor adventures, including adult hikes (with babies in carriers) and toddler walks. Toddler walks include crafts and educational activities about the wildlife encountered along the way.

The people who run these hikes are very responsible and always check the condition of the terrain and the air quality on the day of a hike, making location changes if needed. Families are definitely in good hands here.

Other periodic group activities include bike rides, sledding, camping, and whale watching.

This seminar informs mothers and childcare providers about the benefits of good skin care from infancy. Children can play while the mothers and childcare providers learn; crying babies are always welcome.

Baby Boot Camp is a stroller-based fitness class designed specifically to help moms get fit. Classes combine strength-training exercises with cardiovascular drills, drawing on Pilates, yoga and other abdominal exercises. The structure of all Baby Boot Camp classes follows the guidelines set by the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the American Council on Exercise.

First class is free.

Barrington Park has a lot of facilities for such a relatively small park, (which is presumably why its small parking lot is often not sufficient). Most of these facilities are on the west side of the road.

The playground has all the basics covered and is easy to keep within view. The tennis courts are very popular, and the park also has a baseball diamond with lights and a basketball court.

The recreation center has a gymnasium, a theater, and a community room. Classes held here range from pre-school and parent and me to a variety of sports.

Across Barrington, on the east side of the street, is the popular Barrington Dog Park.

It's worth noting that some residents and politicians have voiced concern about a radioactive waste dump from the 1950s that is said to be buried beneath this park. The issue is a hot topic in the area but to date has not affected the popularity of the tennis courts.

Bloom School of Music offers musical Mommy or Daddy & Me classes, for babes age three months to walking), toddler classes for one to three year-olds that incorporate stories and rhymes, and classes for toddlers two-and-a-half to five years old that include lots of movement with the music.

Classes are charged on a quarterly basis.

BoogieMamas is a dance workout for moms, dads, or caregivers with their kids. Kids play in a room full of brightly colored balls, dance with scarves, ride trains, and move to music from all over the world, while adults are encouraged to dance like nobody's watching.

The teacher, Catherine, is trained in dance, physical theater, and clowning and has worked extensively with children as a teacher and entertainer.

Buddha Baby Fitness offers holistic classes that combine Pilates, yoga, strength and endurance training, music, meditation and guided visualization. Mothers who want to get in shape can network with friends and enjoy the convenience of having their babies with them while they exercise.

Chabad of Marina del Rey is a branch of the Chabad-Lubavitch movement, offering Jewish family programs as well as religious services and education to the community at large. Some children's programs include Mommy & Me, Hebrew school, and Bar or Bat Mitzvah training.

Chabad operates the Palisades Jewish Early Childhood Center and offers a summer camp program at Palisades Elementary School.

ChicosChicas offers music classes in Spanish for babies and toddlers and their caregivers. Children can get immersed in the sounds of the Spanish language, enjoying music and movement in a safe, clean, comfortable environment. No knowledge of Spanish is necessary.

Classes are scheduled once or twice per week.

A wonderful indoor playground, Child's Play has open play and classes on weekdays and private birthday parties on the weekends. The center is very clean and contained. You can always see your kids, and a staff member is always on the floor.

Character visits are generally scheduled the second Thursday every month.

Parent's Night Out is offered every Friday from 6pm-11pm and includes a fully supervised dinner, games, arts and crafts, and more. Kids can stay for the evening or only a few hours. The price is $10 per hour, with a three hour minimum, and reservations are required.

Birthday parties have a maximum of 60 children allowed. All children, nine months to 12 years, including birthday child and siblings, are counted. Extra time is available for last party ($75 per half hour). For additional space, the classroom is available for $50. Gifts are to be opened at home. More than 60 adults and 45 kids requires an additional staff member for $50. Package prices start at $395.

Several different memberships for open play are offered, which can be money savers:

A monthly membership can be purchased for $60 (unlimited use within the month for one child);

A membership of 20 visits can be purchased for $140 (a savings of $1 per visit, to be used within 6 months); or

A membership of 40 visits can be purchased for $240 (a savings of $2 per visit, to be used within 1 year).

A picnic area is available, where patrons may bring in food or purchase snacks and order food from the venue. Please do not bring rice, pasta, casseroles, buffets, chafing dishes, or confetti into the facility.

The entrance fee is a daily fee, meaning that kids can leave, go grab a bite or have a nap, and then come back without paying again.

Child's Play also offers workout classes for moms, including aerobic pole dancing. Childcare is available during any parents' workout class for $5, with advance registration.

Following the infamous incident at the end of 2007 in which a crane dropped a billboard through the roof, Cool Baby's facility is temporarily closed for renovations. Until further notice, many classes are being held at two temporary locations; call for details or see their online schedule, which is updated weekly.

Cool Baby offers enrichment classes for kids and babies in art, music, and yoga, as well as yoga for moms-to-be and new moms by Yoga Works trained teachers. The first pre-natal yoga class is always free. Other options include Abrakadoodle Art, music, Spanish, family circus, and a Daddy & Me Drum class.

There is a Putumayo listening station that kids can use, and this is the only place on the Westside to buy Entertaining Elephants kids' clothes. There's a great selection of books, too.

Cosmikids is a combination enrichment program, indoor play space, discovery center, and party space. Programs include music, yoga, and acting classes, parenting support workshops and groups, parent and child activities, and a homeschooling club.

The Craft and Folk Art Museum (CAFAM) is an institution which pioneered recognition in the Los Angeles area of the aesthetic and cultural merit of traditional arts and crafts. Founded in 1965 by Edith and Frank Wyle as The Egg and the Eye, the museum is known for its exhibitions reflecting the diverse communities and contemporary craft artists and designers of the Southern California region and internationally.

On most weekends, the museum offers workshops on new arts and crafts techniques and cultural information. Recent events have included creating paper quilts while listening to traditional African American lullabies, making marionettes after watching a puppet show, and working with clay in the studio. The museum's Wide World Summer Camp is a great deal, and a great way to expose kids ages six to 12 to different cultures.

The Larry Moss Studio offers a wide array of classes and workshops geared for actors of all ages and levels at the Edgemar Center for the Arts, a state of the art two-theatre and art gallery complex.

Nestled between a cafe, salon, retail shops, and an annex of the Museum of Contemporary Art store, the Center is the anchor of the Edgemar complex.

The complex, designed by architect Frank Gehry, also features family-friendly theater performances.

Mommy and Me Fantastical Story Hour allows young children to explore their creativity and dramatic flair with costumes, story telling, and music. Classes are held on Fridays from 3pm-4pm.
