North Meadow Recreation Center is an indoor/outdoor facility located in the heart of Central Park. Basketball and handball courts, in addition to zillions of youth activities for kids eight and up, including indoor wall climbing, basketball clinics and tournaments, and seasonal camps are offered here. Built originally as stables, the building was converted to a recreational facility in the early 1990s, and underwent a second refurbishment in 1998. The exterior of the building was preserved to protect its Landmark status, but the interior has a cushioned exercise floor, high ceilings, and an indoor climbing wall. Each program uses innovative approaches to encourage self-esteem among the elementary, middle school, and high school age students that participate. Kids ages six to eleven can sign up for Camp Central Park/Winter Wonderland during the winter break. Winter Wonderland campers explore Central Park through rock climbing, ice-skating, special winter nature hikes, and arts & crafts. The program runs 8:30am-3pm, December 26-28, 2007 and February 18-22, 2008. Register early; space is limited. Basketball Clinics are held for kids ages eight to 17, and are geared to increase skills in basketball, team building, and sportsmanship. Saturdays 12n-2pm (seasonally, Spring-Fall). Twelve Handball Courts and six Basketball Courts are open on a first come, first served basis daily from 10am-7pm. Supervised wall climbing is available for adults and children (ages eight and up); times vary and pre-registration is required for groups. Bouldering also is available in Central Park. The Center also loans out Field Day kits. With a photo ID, a visitor can borrow a kit containing a basketball, 10 cones, three bats, a horseshoe set, a playground ball, a nerf ball, a football, a Frisbee, two handballs, a soccer ball, a jump rope, two whiffle balls, and hula hoops. |

RoboFun workshops offer children, ages three to 13, hands-on experience with LEGO Mindstorm Robotics, Video Game Design, Claymation Animation, Web Design, and Building Buddies. RoboFun also coaches robotic teams for competition. Beginners are welcome as are advanced inventors. In the Video Game Design workshop, students design, illustrate, animate, and program media elements - including sound, text, moving and still images, illustrations, and animations - to create video games. Children learn to build and program their own robots using LEGO pieces and a mini-computer during the LEGO Mindstorms Robotics workshop. From Techno Tots (ages three-five) and Techno Flyers (six-eight), to Techno Masters (nine-11), The Techno Team offers instruction designed to provide children with the skills to use computer technology as a component of daily life, while enhancing academic and developmental skills. In addition, Techno Team's specialty courses allow kids to explore digital photography, multimedia software, and computer programming in greater depth. The Fab Fives program, especially designed for five year-olds in half-day school programs, includes a sporting activity and an art, science, or culture themed multimedia project, in addition to basic computer skill training. Group classes, private, and semi-private sessions are available, by appointment only. |
