Boomers, the winner of our 2008 Parents' Picks quest to find the Best Indoor Playspace/Partyspace for Big Kids in Philadelphia, is one of the area's original indoor play venues. The Fun Factory is an educational, indoor playground designed for children ages one to 11. Children ages five to 13 - of any skill level - can participate in stretching, core strengthening, balance training, fitness games, and yoga; kids ages eight and up can try weight training under the close supervision of a Nationally Certified fitness professional. Lawrence Park Swim Club is a private club with two outdoor pools, locker rooms, showers, diving boards, a 63-foot waterslide, toddler play equipment, clubhouse, and a snack bar. Activities include open swim, lap swimming, water exercise classes, private swim lessons, and a youth swim team. Party space is available in the snack bar dining area. The facilities are handicapped accessible.

Linvilla Orchards is one of the last working farms in the Delaware Valley, encompassing more than 300 acres of land devoted to farming, entertainment, education, and recreation. This sprawling family farm includes apple orchards, pumpkinland, a farm market, animals to visit with, and a playground.

The animal area is complete with white-tailed deer, emus, peacocks, goats, sheep and chickens - lots of chickens! Scattered throughout are seed machines where small change gets you a large handful of snacks for the animals. Next to each machine is a hand sanitizer, illustrating the farm's attention to details.

The playground is large and does ask for a small donation, which is reasonable considering everything else is free! Kids will run around for hours on the very large equipment, including several old fire engines. There are several large apple trees that provide shade, and benches are everywhere.

Snacks and drinks are available within the farm market. The bakery has delectable cookies and fantastic pies - be sure to take one home! Picnic tables are also available if you would like to bring your own food stuffs. Restrooms are available across from the playground and within the farm market. The Hidden Hollow and Knowlton Swim clubs, located on the farm at Linvilla Orchards, are open seasonally from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Hidden Hollow offers a 50-meter pool with three diving boards, a 25-meter lap pool, two slides, and three children’s pools. Knowlton offers toddler, intermediate, and 25-meter pools with two sliding boards, as well as boards and platforms for divers. The clubs’ other amenities include tennis, volleyball and basketball courts, swings, jungle gyms, picnic areas, swimming lessons, and a hiking trail. Lloyd Hall, located on Boathouse Row in Fairmount Park, serves as a community recreation center and a public boathouse for Philadelphia.

The New Frankford Community Y, a non-profit organization, is partially housed in the Bromley-Garsed Mansion. Built in 1864 and constructed with Pennsylvania-quarried brownstone in Second Empire style, it is two-and-a-half stories with 20 rooms. In 1975 an addition, including a heated pool, gymnasium, and fitness room, was added to the historically preserved mansion.

Swim lessons, for students from ages six months to adult, are divided into different skill levels and are designed as a six-week course. Private lessons are available upon request. Life-guarding courses, which include CPR and First Aid classes, are taught by certified Red Cross Instructors. Scuba diving lessons and swim team are also offered.

Babysitting is available for parents using the facilities Mon-Fri 8:30am-12n; Mon-Thu 6pm-9pm; and Sat 9am-12n, at no charge for full privilege members.

The Preschool Program prepares children for kindergarten by introducing them to an active educational curriculum that includes basic writing and reading skills, math concepts, arts and crafts, field trips, music, and drama. Full day programs run from 6:30am to 6pm, and kids may join in starting at the age of fifteen months.

Before and Afterschool Care, for kids in kindergarten through 6th grade, is available beginning at 6:30am. Afterschool is open from school dismissal to 6pm. Schools served include Steven Decatur and A.L. Fitzpatrick.

Birthday Party options at the Y include Gym parties, for kids ages three to 11, with a choice of soccer, basketball, foot hockey, or gymnastics themes; pool parties with lifeguards; and themed parties, which the staff can help design. These include an hour of games and activities and are held in the childcare area.
