Classes are developmentally appropriate and introduce kids to color, texture, shape, and creativity. Abrakadoodle programs are broken into age-appropriate groupings, including Twoosy Doodlers, for children age 20-36 months; Mini Doodlers, for children age three through Kindergarten; and Doodlers, for children in grades one through six. The American West Heritage Center (AWHC) is a 160-acre living museum of American history that gives perspective to a significant time in American western life. Visitors can learn about the past through hands-on programs that make American west history come alive. The essence of the AWHC is to provide an opportunity to reflect backward to better understand how to live forward and positively impact our quality of life. Exploring the Center can take anywhere from 90 minutes to several hours depending on the kind of experience visitors want. For a small fee, there are "make-n-take" items that can be made for souvenirs in each venue. Native American Encampment: Guests learn about the indigenous tribe of the area, the Northwestern Band of the Shoshone Nation. These Native Americans are the descendants of the Bear River Massacre, the largest Indian massacre west of the Mississippi. Tipis can be rented for an overnight experience. Mountain Man Camp: Visitors learn about the fur trade and how it influenced the settlement of the west. They can then test their bartering skills at the trading post. Pioneer Settlement: Guests learn about westward expansion, where they can see a dugout, a homesteader's cabin, or a wagon encampment, and even try pulling a handcart. Visitors may also book a handcart trek. Historical Farm: Depicts farming the way it was done in 1917. It includes a display of old time equipment and tractors, as well as adorable farm animals for the kids. Treats are cooked for visitors on an old wood-burning stove. Old Time Wood Shop: Guests can watch wooden bowls, spoons, and toys made at the shop, and all of the items are available for purchase. The AWHC offers summer camps for kids in grades 1-6. The camps focus on hands-on experiences with Native American, pioneer, and historical farm life. Call for details and registration; camps start around mid-June. A dutch oven dinner is served with all the trimmings, and entertainment might include a gun fight, cowboy poetry, Indian dancing, or live music. The program, offered from Memorial Day weekend through Halloween, begins at 6pm, and guests are encouraged to bring a jacket. Big Horse Adventure programs cost $29.95 for adults, $19.95 for children (4-10), and ages three and under are free. The center offers two types of programs - camps during the summer months and field trips during the school year. Summer camps are the focus of the program. Two to six day overnight camps are currently offered, as well as three specialty camps - Physics Camp, Astronaut Training Camp, and Academy Camp. In the various camps kids explore science and technology through hands-on activities such as building model rockets, training for microgravity in a pool, piloting their team into outer space on a space shuttle simulator, playing Astro Jeopardy, meeting a former astronaut, and climbing into a jet simulator cockpit. Field trips during the camps include trips to the ATK Launch Systems Plant to see where space shuttle boosters are made and to Weber State University to see a planetarium show. Check the website for each camp's details. The camps have a 60-70% student return rate, so it's a good idea to register early to ensure a spot. The Children's Theatre and School of the Arts offers live drama for schools and families, based on stories from classic literature. The versions of the plays you see here are not the versions you may be familiar with, but they are especially well-suited for children. Shows are performed Fridays at 7pm and Saturdays at 1pm and 4:30pm, with additional performances weekday mornings for elementary school groups. Performances are preceded by a short talk on theater etiquette, and the cast stays on stage after the bows to answer questions from the audience. Each person attending a performance must have a ticket; no babes in arms allowed. Tickets can be purchased by phone or in person. Box office hours are Mon-Thu 11am-4pm, Fri 11am-2pm, and one hour prior to performances. The School of the Arts portion of the organization teaches drama and movement to children ages six to 18 in weekly afterschool sessions during the traditional school year and Summer Theater Camp sessions. Three two-week summer camps are offered over the course of the summer. The school's Youth Stage program offers students opportunities to work with professional directors, set designers, costumers, lighting designers, and stage managers while receiving more advanced performance training. The group performs a few productions during the school year. The exhibits are free to the public and include a real Moon rock, a photo-op on the Martian surface, Newton's Daydream (the most extensive audio kinetic sculpture ever completed by artist George Rhoads, featuring over one mile of brightly colored steel and four interactive stations), and much more. Clark Planetarium also houses the ATK 3D IMAX Theatre, with a five-story screen and 12,000 watts of digital sound. The Hansen Dome Theatre offers three-dimensional views on a 360-degree dome screen. After visiting the exhibits and taking in a show, visitors can roam the Planet Fun store. It features a wide selection of fun science toys, planispheres (star wheels), astronomy software, books and videos, binoculars, telescopes, and accessories for amateur astronomers. Budding astronomers enjoy Clark Planetarium birthday parties. Party packages include use of the birthday party room (up to 40 people) for 90 minutes, science demonstrations during the party, a t-shirt for the birthday child, admission for up to 15 children in either the ATK IMAX or Hansen Dome Theatre, a "happy birthday" message to the child on the screen before the show, "happy birthday" signs throughout the planetarium, and priority seating for the show. Besides a basketball court, auditorium, and several meeting rooms, the building also houses a senior center and the Columbus Library. Open play basketball and billiards is available to children in 3rd through 12th grades. The schedule for open play changes throughout the year, so call for times. Parents or legal guardians must fill out liability waivers for their children to participate. Open play is free. Other programs for children include an indoor soccer league for boys and girls ages four to 12, and a Youth City Council for children in 9th through 12th grades. Many organizations offer classes at the Columbus Center, for both adults and children. Classes include Hula Dance, Hawaiian Language, Judo, various types of Karate, Jazzercise, yoga, guitar lessons, Salsa, Swing, Ballroom, and Latin Dance, and more.
