Aly's Water Works offers private swim lessons and parent-toddler classes. Private lessons are available to anyone age three and up. Parent-Toddler classes are for children from 12 to 36 months old.

Kids' Water Fitness classes are offered during the summer months. The classes are geared toward children ages eight to 12, but kids as young as five are welcome to attend. Pre-registration is required. Check the website for details.

Bailie's Gymnastics offers gymnastics/tumbling/fitness programs for children ages one to eighteen. Classes for boys and girls are available. Children with advanced skill levels can join Bailie's competitive teams.

Tiny Tumblers is a parent/child movement and gymnastics class for boys and girls ages one to two. Children learn basic gymnastics skills - balance, coordination, motor skills - using equipment such as the vault, balance beam, tumbling mats, parachutes, bean bags, and hoops. The kids also learn to share, take turns, and work in groups.

Three and four year-olds are ready for the Preschool Class - an opportunity to gain all the skills listed above, using much of the same equipment, but this time without the mommy/daddy assistance. Teachers work with the children, helping them advance through several skill levels throughout the course. Two times a year, the students perform routines for their families to show off what they've learned.

Recreational Classes (for girls ages 5-12) focus on preparing gymnasts not only for more advanced gymnastics skills, but also for skills needed for any other sport or physical activity. Participants gain strength, flexibility, balance, coordination, body awareness, and life skills. Our classes also help kids develop such important life skills such as goal setting, perseverance, and a positive attitude toward learning/trying new things.

Dimple Dell Fitness & Recreation Center
is one of several local fitness centers that have benefited from the Zoo, Arts, and Parks (ZAP) Tax. Money from the fund helped build the facility in 2001, and locals have been enjoying the fitness center ever since.

The center offers a climbing wall, two indoor pools (a lap pool and a leisure/activity pool), a fitness room, aerobics areas, a gym, a basketball court, an indoor track, and a drop-in child care center.

The Leisure Pool features a lazy river, a large water slide, a bubble couch, and a water fort. It is open Mon-Tue 3pm-8:30pm, Wed-Fri 1pm-8:30pm, Sat 11am-8:30pm, and Sun 10am-3:30pm. Tot Time, a time for just parents and children under the age of five, is offered Tue & Thu 11am-12n. The center also operates the Draper Outdoor Pool from Memorial Day to Labor Day each summer.

A flat daily fee is charged to the center, which entitles folks to swim, play basketball, workout, or whatever. For people to come frequently, it is advisable to look into the center's annual memberships. Membership cost varies by age and by payment type. See website for details.

A deposit is required at the time of booking.

Drop-in child care is available for children ages three months to eight years. Parents must remain in the fitness center while their child is in the day care, and there is a two hour limit. The child care center is open Mon-Thu 7:45am-11:45am and 5pm-8:30pm, Fri 7:45am-11:45am, and Sat 7:45am-11:30am. Reservations are required 9am-11am Mon-Fri; call to reserve a spot. The cost is $1.25/hour.

The winner of our 2008 Parents' Picks quest to find the Best Museum for Little Kids and the Best Museum for Big Kids in Salt Lake City, Discovery Gateway (formerly known as the Children's Museum of Utah) is designed to be an interactive discovery center for children of all ages. The exhibits encourage kids to use their imagination, explore, and connect with others and the world around them. In addition to hands-on play, Discovery Gateway has partnered with Junior Achievement to create exhibits that encourage children to consider and explore career possibilities.

The main floor of the museum is packed with things for babies, toddlers, and grade school-aged children. The first exhibit, a huge beehive full of balls, encourages children to work together to send the balls through a labyrinth of tubes and chutes. Beyond the beehive, children can operate a kid-sized crane to build buildings in the Construction Zone, create pretend meals and hang out in the House, head out to the Market where they can fill their shopping carts and operate the cash register, do a little work at the Farm, climb on the Climbing Wall, or play in the sand, create works of art, read, do puzzles, and build things at the Curiosity Shop. While all of these exhibits are fun for the kids, the big draw on the main floor is the Water Play exhibit. Faucets, streams, hoses, rubber duckies, ping-pong balls, waterfalls, buckets, water tubes, and strainers keep kids busy for great lengths of time. Rubber aprons are available if parents are concerned about trying to keep clothing dry, but the kids don't seem to mind a little wet clothing.

Across from the water area is the Hatch, Waddle, and Fly exhibit, a special play area just for children ages three and under. Inside the Hatch, Waddle, and Fly area, kids can play in a little house, rock on rocking horses, dress up like a beaver and hang out in a beaver dam, and play in a little rowboat. A Swan Pond at the back of the exhibit is for children under 18-months old. It is a soft play area with toys just for the very young. Off to the side of the Swan Pond is a comfortable sitting area for parents. A bookshelf near the couch has a selection of parenting books and toys for babies. The sitting area also has a baby bouncer.

In the upper level, kids from toddlers to teens can find fun things to do. At Media Central, kids can sit at a news desk and pretend to anchor the evening news, while hands-on science fun for older kids and teens takes place in the Studio. A story factory at the north end of the building encourages children of all ages to push the limits of their imagination as they create and share stories. The south end of the upper level features traveling exhibits.

On the outdoor terrace of the upper level, kids can get inside a Life Flight helicopter and pretend to fly off on heroic rescue missions. The Saving Lives from the Sky exhibit also has a dress up area and information about the careers of rescue workers. The helicopter terrace is open year round, weather permitting.

Elevators make it easy to move strollers between floors. Stroller parking is available in popular areas of the museum where gridlock is likely to occur. Lockers can be rented on the main level of the museum for $0.25. Changing tables are available in both the men's and the women's restrooms on the main floor, and two family restrooms are offered as well. The upper level restrooms do not currently have baby changing areas, but the museum expects to add them.

Annual memberships are available and range in price from $115-$500, depending on the size of your family and the benefits you want to include.

Birthday parties: Two party options are offered at the museum - the Bash and the Extravaganza. The Bash consists of museum admission for 15 people, exclusive use of the party room for one hour, a party host, and place settings. The Extravaganza includes all of the items mentioned above plus an extra 30 minutes in the party room, a half-sheet cake, a juice box for every guest, 2-for-1 passes for the children, and a t-shirt for the birthday child. Fees apply for additional guests at a party; parties cannot exceed 20 guests. Hands-on activities can be added to any party for a fee. The Expressions Dance Program offers classes in Combo Dance (jazz, hip hop, tumbling), ballet, tumbling, hip hop/breakdance, cheer/tumbling, Mommy and Me, Preschool Combo (tap, ballet, jazz, creative, and tumbling, with a monthly theme), and boys-only hip hop/tumbling. The instructors strive to provide a positive, modest, clean dance environment while teaching the children proper dance technique and building their students' self esteem.

Each session includes 10 weekly, 45-minute classes involving songs, rhythmic rhymes, movement, and instrument play.
