The Cathedral of the Madeleine was built in 1909 and underwent a $9.7 million renovation in 1991. The cathedral is listed on both the Utah and National Registers of Historic Places. Both the exterior and interior of the building is a feast for the eyes. The art and furnishings are inspired by the Spanish Gothic art of the Middle Ages. A 4,066 pipe organ serves both liturgical and concert purposes, and several public concerts are performed at the cathedral throughout the year. Other events offered include the Madeleine Festival in the spring and the Eccles Organ Festival in the fall. The cathedral's website has a complete schedule of arts events. The cathedral is open for self-guided tours Monday-Friday 8am-5:15pm. Check the website for information about worship times. |

First Presbyterian Church offers a contemporary and a traditional church service every Sunday. Because of the fine acoustics in the church's sanctuary, several community concerts and recitals are held here every year. The church was built in an English-Scottish Gothic revival style; the Carlisle Cathedral in England was the architect's model. The red sandstone was pulled from Red Butte Canyon over a century ago. |

Built in 1924 in the ornate Byzantine style, Holy Trinity Cathedral and the adjoining Hellenic Memorial Cultural Center are the spiritual and cultural hub of the Greek Orthodox community in Salt Lake City. The Hellenic Cultural Museum and gift shop, located in the basement of the cathedral, has exhibits showing many aspects of Greek life from the first immigrants in 1905 to the present. Displays include dolls in regional Greek costumes, household items from early Greek immigrants, and religious artifacts from the early days of the cathedral. A few of the interesting items on display include the early school desks, typewriters with Greek letters, and wedding dresses worn by early Greek immigrants. The walls are covered with photographs of people and places in the local Greek community. A small sign on the north wall of the cathedral marks the museum entrance. |

The Sri Sri Radha Krishna Temple seems a bit out of place in such a predominantly LDS region, but it has a fascinating history, which is closely tied to the LDS church. The building itself is an amazing structure, and the surrounding grounds are park-like, with wandering peacocks, lily and koi ponds, a large stage for entertainment, and the largest herd of trained llamas in central Utah. The public is welcome to tour the temple and its grounds daily from 10am to 7pm. Tour guides are available. While there is no set fee for temple tours, donations are always appreciated. The temple's gift store is stocked with apparel, CDs, brass ware, wooden carved screens, swings, dining sets, books, and sofa sets. A large vegetarian buffet is offered during tour hours. All are invited to take part in the feast of both Indian style and western hot entrees, sweets, and snacks. Donations are accepted for the buffet. Group tours are welcome. Many school groups, senior centers, summer camp organizations, and scout groups tour the facilities each year. Call or email to book a group visit. Besides tours, everyone is also invited to attend regular Sunday services, which take place each Sunday at 5pm. Besides the service, the evening also includes dance, music, philosophy, storytelling, and a vegetarian feast. Several festivals are hosted at the Krishna Temple each year. The Llama Fest in July and the India Fest in September are two that are especially fun for families. It's a great way to see and learn about Indian culture and customs, and have a lot of fun too. |
