Alta Canyon Sports Center is full of activities for all age groups. The highlight of the Center is the outdoor Olympic-size swimming pool, open Memorial Day through Labor Day, which offers magnificent views of the mountains. A concession stand is open during swim times to buy snacks.

Teens can register for R.E.B.A.L. Summer Camp (Recreation and Endurance Boys And Ladies). The camps are for teens ages 12 to 14, and planned activities include sports, arts and crafts, and fieldtrips. Some specific fieldtrips/activities the camp has offered are trips to Boondocks, Raging Waters, Nickelcade, and movie premiers. The weeks are themed, with themes catering to teens.

The Archery Park and Range was designed by the Oquirrh Mountain Bowman's Association, and features a one mile long field course with paved pathways, 14 targets (with 14 more under construction), and a wheelchair accessible three-acre distance shooting range. The Horse Race Track and Stables features a 3/4 mile long track for chariots, horse races, polo cross, and horse training. Bleachers provide seating for 2,000 fans, and the stables are available for overnight stays ($12/night). The track is open to the public unless an event is scheduled. The Motocross and BMX tracks allow racers of all ages to test their abilities and compete on a variety of challenging courses. Three Motocross tracks are open seasonally for public use daily from 10am until dark. The Main Track is 7/8 mile long, the Beginner ATV Track is 3/8 mile long, and the Peewee Track is 1/4 mile long. The BMX Track is a 1,200 foot long track, and is sanctioned by the American Bicycle Association. The track is open seasonally, and riders of all ages are welcome. When open, the public is welcome to practice daily.

The Oquirrh Mountain Mining Museum is sponsored by
Barrick Gold Mines Inc. and Kennecott Utah Copper. The exhibits feature old mines, current mines, and

Three Pavilions are available. The Large Pavilion offers onsite restrooms, concessions, close proximity to parking, electrical hook-ups and lighting, and picnic tables. The Softball Complex offers four fields which are open to league play four nights per week. The fields have lighting capabilities for after dark use. Dimple Dell Fitness & Recreation Center
is one of several local fitness centers that have benefited from the Zoo, Arts, and Parks (ZAP) Tax. Money from the fund helped build the facility in 2001, and locals have been enjoying the fitness center ever since.

The center offers a climbing wall, two indoor pools (a lap pool and a leisure/activity pool), a fitness room, aerobics areas, a gym, a basketball court, an indoor track, and a drop-in child care center.

The Leisure Pool features a lazy river, a large water slide, a bubble couch, and a water fort. It is open Mon-Tue 3pm-8:30pm, Wed-Fri 1pm-8:30pm, Sat 11am-8:30pm, and Sun 10am-3:30pm. Tot Time, a time for just parents and children under the age of five, is offered Tue & Thu 11am-12n. The center also operates the Draper Outdoor Pool from Memorial Day to Labor Day each summer.

DiveMates offers scuba training and certification, dive travel, trips, tours, and dive-alongs. Young diver-want-to-bes (ages eight through 14) can sign up for the Bubblemakers or the Seal Team courses, which are non-certification programs that get children comfortable with diving basics while having fun. The Open Water Diver class is the entry-level certification class for ages 10 and up, and once certified, many other recreational, professional, and specialty courses are available.

DiveMates holds its classes at public pools all around the valley. Equipment is provided for class participants, so this is a great way to explore the sport of scuba diving without making a huge investment. Classes start at $25 per person.

A variety of dive trips are offered throughout the year for certified divers. Some dive trips are relatively close - Lake Mead, Lake Tahoe - while others are more exotic.

Dive-Alongs are family-friendly trips to "local" lakes (Fish Lake, Strawberry Reservoir, Lake Tahoe, and Lake Meade). The trips are usually inexpensive camping excursions with fun for the whole family - not just the divers.

Designed to integrate the family leisure, fitness, and competitive aspects of aquatic activities, Fairmont Aquatic Center offers both a leisure pool and a lap pool. In the leisure pool, swimmers are entertained with a water slide, current channel, vortex, and interactive water play features. The lap pool offers eight 25-yard lanes for the serious swimmer.

Franklin Covey Field is perhaps the most picturesque ball field in the US, and it's home to the Salt Lake Bees triple-A baseball team, affiliated with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. From home plate, players and fans are treated to an amazing view of the Wasatch Mountains. In addition to the regular stadium seating, seating is available on the grass berm (no lawn chairs allowed). The stadium can seat a total of 15,500 fans. Pay phones, drinking fountains, and ATMs are available on the concourse.

Archibald Gardner built the Old Gardner Flour Mill in 1877, and now it's been restored into Gardner Village. What was once the mill is now Archibald's Restaurant and Country Furniture & Gifts. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The historic homes surrounding the mill are now quaint shops. In the Village, you can take a stroll and admire the beautiful flowers, visit some of the 22 shops, dine at the restaurant or bakery, and feed the ducks.

Sweet Afton's candy shop offers free fudge samples; over 30 flavors of fudge are made here, with 14-18 on display at any given time. Old classics like wax lips, fizz, and Sen-Sens will take you down memory lane and make this candy store as much fun for you as your kids.

The Gene Fullmer Fitness and Recreation Center is one of the recreation facilities built with funds from the ZAP tax, which voters approved in 1997. Participants must be at least three years old, and must weigh less than 250 pounds. While the price may seem steep and the flight time limited (one or two minutes per flight rotation for beginners), most flyers feel the experience is well worth it. The basic flight package includes a flight training class, flight gear, a souvenir flight certificate, and, of course, flying time in the wind tunnel. Ivies Acres Farm offers a variety of mini horse and pony services, including pony rides, wagon rides, cart rides, donkey rides, classes, camps, "day at the farm" experiences, animal assisted therapy, and animal breeding and sales. Kindermusik by Song of the Heart offers music and movement to families with children newborn to age seven. Classes involve singing, movement, listening, instrument play, and musical stories. Parents and tots can bond while exploring, learning, and growing through music. Song of the Heart is a Kindermusik Maestro Studio - one of the top 5% of Kindermusik studios world wide.

Take home materials - music CDs, books, instruments, art banners - are part of each class, and are included in the price of the class.

The following Kindermusik classes are offered at Song of the Heart: Sign & Sing (for kids from six months to 2 1/2 years old), Village (for newborns to 18 months old), Our Time (for kids from 18 months to 3 1/2 years old), Imagine That! (for 3 1/2 to five year olds), Kindermusik for the Young Child (for five to seven year olds), and Family Time (for newborns to seven years). Most classes are held at the Children's Ballet Theatre (2505 East 3300 South), but some take place at Brighton Gardens (100 South 500 East). Check the website for a current schedule and pricing.

Song of the Heart offers in-home birthday parties featuring 30-45 minutes of Kindermusik fun. Pricing starts at $75 and includes a gift for the birthday child. Call to reserve a party time.

Lil Flippers Gymnastics offers parent/tot gymnastics classes, as well as gymnastics instruction for children through age 13. Children in the younger age groups use gymnastics equipment that is scaled down to meet their needs. Students can take part in holiday and spring performances, field trips, and local parades. Private lessons are also taught.

Birthday party packages for children ages three to 12 are available. Children under the age of three can have parties at the gym as well, but full parent participation is required. The parties include an hour of play time in the gym (obstacle courses, trampoline play, parachute games, etc.) and thirty minutes in the party room. Balloon decorations, tablecloths, and invitations are provided by the gym. If parents plan on bringing food and drinks, they need to bring the appropriate paper products. A refrigerator and freezer are available for storing cakes and ice cream while the kids play. Check the gym's website for additional details and pricing.

The Living Planet Aquarium is continually expanding its "preview exhibit" - a taste of what it envisions for a future 90,000-square foot world-class aquarium in Salt Lake County. The Living Planet quickly outgrew its original facility at The Gateway, where it first set up shop in 2004. It moved to its Sandy location in 2006. The new facility is much larger (allowing folks more elbow room as they browse the exhibits), and offers free parking and easy access from the interstate.

Patrons can expect to see their old favorites from the Gateway location, like the giant octopus, sharks, eels, seahorses, and a giant 100 year-old lobster. A touch pool allows children (and parents) a chance to get up close and personal with some stingrays, and toddlers love exploring the nooks, crannies, caves, and tunnels in the Coral Community exhibit.

Another popular exhibit for kids of all ages is the Jellies Room, featuring several species of jellyfish including the upside-down jellyfish, sea nettles, and moon jellies.

The aquarium's Bio-Facts Station is a hands-on marine biology learning center where guests can see and study many species of crabs, snails, anemones, and shrimps, and even touch some sea stars, urchins, sea cucumbers, and horseshoe crabs. Naturalists are on-hand to explain how these animals live, feed, and propagate.

The Utah Waters Gallery houses some of Utah's threatened and endangered species - June suckers, least chub, Columbia spotted frogs, boreal toads, etc. Families can learn all about the importance of preserving and protecting Utah's waterways as they explore and experience this exhibit.

The Life on the Reef exhibit features marine life from the Indo-Pacific waters. Visitors can get an up-close look at the structure of coral communities and the animals that feed, rest, hide, and reside in this habitat.

No stroller rental is available, but people are welcome to bring their own strollers in the building - there is plenty of room to maneuver them. Both the men's and the women's restrooms have changing tables.

The aquarium's cafe serves sandwiches, wraps, and salads. The quality is hit and miss. We wish the food, which must be eaten in the cafe and not carried into the galleries, would be served on washable, reusable trays and plates. It seems odd that a restaurant in a facility with an environmental message uses so much disposable material.

A gift store is located at the front of the building (west of the entrance) and a little cafe operates in a room just east of the reception desk.

Summer Day Camps for children ages six to 12 are offered. Each camp teaches kids something cool about life under the ocean. The camps occur in June and July, and include a snack and T-shirt. Reservations can be made for birthday parties, family reunions, business meetings, and social events in the aquarium's "Sunken Ship," a replica of an 1830s sailing ship. Party package pricing can be found on the aquarium's website, or call for details and reservations.
