Serving 243 students in four middle school grades (fifth through eighth), the Salt Lake Arts Academy is located in downtown SLC. It is the goal of the Academy to create a middle school program that trains young adults to become the future designers and decision makers of their community. The Salt Lake City Open Classroom Charter School offers parents an alternative to traditional K-8 public school programs. It is a free public school where children are empowered to take responsibility for their own learning and emphasis is placed on building a safe, respectful community for learning. Parents play an active role in their child's education, joining the classroom for three hours weekly to facilitate small-group, hands-on learning. Students are placed in multi-age classrooms, allowing for flexibility to meet each child's unique needs and to allow students to learn from their peers - both older and younger. The school invites students, teachers, and parents to all collaborate as a community to inspire and celebrate the adventure of learning. Open Classroom has an intensive Word Language program in which children in grades K-4 learn Spanish, and children in grades 5-8 learn French. For the 2007/2008 school year, student/teacher ratio is expected to be about 22:1 for kindergarten, 21:1 for first through fourth grade, and 19:1 for fifth through eighth grades. The school strives to lower these ratios. When parent co-opers are factored into the equation, the student/teacher ratio for time spent on core curriculum requirements and other subjects is close to 6:1. Tours are scheduled throughout the school year; prospective students and parents are welcome to visit the school to see the dynamic that develops from the unique classroom environment. Parents can also learn more about the school during open houses. Information about tours and open houses is available on the school's website. Parents can also contact the principal, Jeff Herr, at the number listed above. |
